Oxygen During the summer, Miltinnie Yih gave a talk for moms entitled "Put your oxgyen mask on first." The reference is to the instruction in the event of decompression within the cabin of the airplane--when the oxygen masks drop out of from the overhead compartment, you should put your own on before assisting others. Otherwise, you may become drowsy or else faint from the lack of oxygen, rendering you unable to help yourself, and others. I really liked that title, because it reminded me that women (not just moms) tend to over-exert themselves inhelping others, and forget to help themselves. Women like to dash around tending to the needs of their parents, husbands, children, friends, boyfriends, and co-workers. They are the ones driving the elderly relatives around. They are always the first to volunteer at church. They're always ready to talk to a friend in need. And at this time of year, they're the ones dashing around buying Christmas gifts. As for Quiet Time: they don't even have any time, let alone quiet time. And at the end of the day, they collapse onto the couch and wonder why they're so tired and burnt out. Surely, we ought to love our neighbor at ourselves; but this implies that we know how to love ourselves! 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 reminds us that we comfort others through the comfort that we ourselves receive from God; if we never go to God, from what source can you minister to others? At the end of the day, the Lord, and our pursuit of Him, is more important than serving others. For our God is a jealous God; He desires us to love others, but not at the expense of loving Him. This year's theme is OXYGEN, which is a reminder for all women to put their oxygen masks on first. We will host a series of Bible lessons with discussion one Saturday morning a month, as we believe the study of Scripture is the best place to start in your search for the Lord. We understand that all women are busy; but we would like to offer a safe and quiet place once a month for you to slow down, come before the Lord, and BREATHE.
Upcoming Events "How to Say
No Without Guilt" Do you feel like you are being pulled in different directions by the pressure of deadlines, the demands and expectations of others, etc.? Are your unfinished tasks piling up? One of the reason we are in this predicament is because we haven't learned to say no. Come and study the example of Jesus who knew when to say no during His three year ministry on earth. Our first OXYGEN teacher will be Nancy Chin. Nancy has been a former committee member with Women's Ministries, and is currently leading a small group for women. She works as a pharmacist at MGH, is married to our Senior Pastor, Steven Chin, and has two grown children, Stefanie (who just got married in September), and Matthew. Our session will consist of large group teaching (by Nancy), small group break-out discussion, and light refreshments. All welcome. RSVP Bernice Cheung |
