Staying Connected

How many times have you been cut off in the middle of a cell phone conversation and been left shouting, “Hullo? Hullooo?” into the ether? Have you ever moved your head around, cell phone attached, like a 1960’s era television antenna, angling for a better signal? Or have you ever gone to work only to find that the internet is down, and all your co- workers are sitting slumped at their desks, dissolute? Welcome to the technological age, when becoming “disconnected” is an event worthy of widespread panic!

We can become disconnected in other ways as well. As our worlds become more and more transient, and our social circles constantly shift, we start depending on friends who live thousands of miles away. While in the past, young women learned the ways of the world from their older relatives— mothers, grandmothers and aunts, now they learn from Oprah or Annie’s Mailbox. This disconnection in our lives has caused panic of its own kind, as more and more women are finding themselves isolated or lonely.

Connection is integral to our lives and to our spiritual growth. We are encouraged not to give up meeting together (Hebrews 10:24), but to encourage one another and build each other up (1Thessalonians 5:11). Older women are exhorted to train up the younger women as well (Titus 2:4).

It is the goal of the English Women’s Ministries to help you get reconnected to each other. Our goal this year is to be a resource network, linking you to people and resources. Our main vehicle for communication will be this email newsletter and periodic emailed announcements. And it is our desire that through becoming connected you might build up the most important connection of all, the connection to the vine, our Lord Jesus Christ.

Our Ministry Team this year:

PMS
Our theme this year is Women's Health: Physical, Mental, and Spiritual. We will be holding four to six open gatherings for you to meet one another and to invite friends. These open gatherings will be grouped around three health topics; a short devotional will be included. The topics we choose are purposefully "neutral", this is great opportunity to invite friends, relatives, and colleagues as an introduction to women's ministries and to the church.

September - December Physical Health

October 2: A Straighter You: Preventing Back and Neck Pain 10am, Newton Campus
Are you feeling tension in your neck? Is your back sore from a day of study or work (house or office)? Do you feel tightness around your shoulder area? This may be due to your posture. Maintaining good posture is key to how you feel physically throughout the day. The Women’s Ministry is pleased to have physical therapist Yi Li Chiu come and share the benefits of having a good posture. She will also show us stretches that we can practice at home or in the office. Yi Li will provide us ergonomic tips in setting up our desk properly. Regardless if you are a student, office worker, or a stay-at-home mom, come and learn how to be a straighter you!

November 6: Back to Nutrition Basics-The Food Pyramid and the Anatomy of the "Nutrition Facts" label
10am, Newton Campus
Atkins Diet, The Zone, Grapefruit Diet...It's time to de-clutter our minds and get back to the basics! The Women's Ministry is pleased to have Registered Dietitian, Alice Ng, to come and re-introduce the USDA Food Guide Pyramid and the Asian Diet Pyramid. She will also help us decipher and dissect the "Nutrition Facts" label seen on almost every food item that we purchase at the grocery store. All are welcome!

Still to come:
January to March: Mental Health
April to June: Spiritual Health

Mom’s Groups
Karen Liao and Mary Lum have organized a mom’s group on Tuesdays. This group meets at 11am periodically, dates will be announced. Open to everyone. Please contact Karen Liao or Mary Lum if interested!

Mentors
Our theme of “Mentoring” garnered a lot of interest last year. We’d like to continue to expand this mentoring theme, by connecting mentors and mentorees. Here’s how it works: If you have a specific question or have a specific issue about which you’d like to speak someone, let us know! We’ll do our best to connect you with a Christian women, who is either older or has experience in that area. We’ll encourage you to meet and chat just once or twice. No need to sign a one-year contract, it’s just a way for you to connect over certain events in your life. If you’d like to meet with some younger women, let us know as well! Contact Bernice Cheung if you’re interested.

Other Ministries
We are also here to support women who have a heart to minister to others! If you have a burden to serve others, let us know and we’ll do our best to help you get started and keep you supported. Suggestions: Meals-on-wheels to mothers who just had a baby, prayer ministries, hosting a tea in your home, a road trip to Ikea.

Outside Ministries
We also let you know of ministries and events for women outside of BCEC.

Grace Chapel's Winterlude This is a retreat organized by Grace Chapel's women's ministries. It will run from January 14-16, 2005 down at the Cape. We usually have a group of women from BCEC who go every year, let us know if you would like to attend and we'll try to hook you up with others who are also going! For information, go to Grace Chapel or jump right to Winterlude 2005.

Joy Bible Study and Mom to Mom Some women from BCEC also attend the Joy Bible Study and Mom to Mom at Grace Chapel. Let us know if you're interested and we'll make introductions!
