THEME

God Is…

If we were asked to describe God, which attributes first come to mind? His love, his kindness, his patience, etc? Understandably, we gravitate towards the attributes most familiar to us – and most similar. We too can be loving, kind, and patient. Theologians describe these as communicable attributes of God. He communicates (shares) these traits with the creatures he made in his own image.

But, in Christian theology, there are four attributes of God that have been classically defined as incommunicable. They are unique to God as Creator and are not shared with creatures. The four incommunicable attributes are God’s independence, his immutability, his eternality, and his omnipresence. Some might assume that focusing on the profound difference between us and God would make God appear more distant and detached from our lives. But, in fact, the opposite occurs. Our love for God tends to grow in proportion to our expanded grasp of his greatness – especially when everything is set in the context of the gospel.

The goal of this series of messages is not to fill your head with information to move your heart with truth. With truth that moves you to live differently in the light of who God is.
